Our Mission:

The mission of the Houston Sierra Club is to foster the quality of the environment within its territorial limits and to work for the purposes of the Sierra Club, including:   "To protect and conserve the natural resources of the State of Texas, the United States, and the world; to undertake an publish scientific and educational studies concerning all aspects of man's environment and the natural ecosystems of the world; and to educate the people of the United States and the world to the need to preserve and restore the quality of that environment and the integrity of those ecosystems."

Who We Are:

The Sierra Club's members are 700,000 of your friends and neighbors. Inspired by nature, we work together to protect our communities and the planet. The Club is America's oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization.

Over 25,000 Texans count themselves as Sierra Club members, including nearly 6,000 in the Houston Region.  If you are not currently a member, we invite you to join us.

In pursuit of its mission, the Houston Regional Group supports the work of a number of standing committees in the areas of Conservation, Political Action, and Outreach:

Conservation Committee

The Conservation Committee directs the conservation efforts of the Group and oversees the work of the subcommittees.  The committee has scheduled in alternate months or as required. Visitors and new volunteers are always welcome.  E-mail Frank Blake at frankblake@juno.com for more information.

Subcommittees:

  • Air Quality  - The Air Quality Subcommittee promotes public awareness of local air quality issues.  The subcommittee meets monthly and seeks colleagues to work on many phases of monitoring, informing and promoting action on Houston's air problems. Help keep Houston from permanently surpassing Los Angeles as the smoggiest city in the United States.  E-mail Frank Blake at frankblake@juno.com for more information.
    .
  • Forestry - The Forestry Subcommittee promotes responsible management of Texas' forest resources. Join the  Forestry Subcommittee. Call Brandt Mannchen at 713-664-5962 for more information.
    ..
  • Recycling - The Solid Waste & Recycling Subcommittee encourages recycling and reuse.
    .
  • Sprawl/Transportation - The Sprawl/Transportation Subcommittee promotes public awareness of transportation alternatives and the effect public transportation policy has on our regional environment and quality of life. The Sprawl/Transportation Subcommittee advocates the principles of responsible growth.
    .
  • Wetlands & Coastal Preservation - The Wetlands and Coastal Preservation Subcommittee promotes awareness of issues relating to wetlands habitats and Galveston Bay.

Service Projects

  • Jesse Jones Park - The Houston Sierra Club has adopted a trail in Jesse Jones Park and Nature Center in Humble, Texas. This beautiful park is far enough away from the hectic pace of the city yet still close enough to be convenient to home. It is at the end of Kenswick Drive north of FM 1960, just west of Hwy 59 north. It features a boardwalk through cypress trees and beautiful frontage on Cypress Creek. Wildlife watching and hiking are especially good. The park’s web site is at http://www.hcp4.net/jones/jjpinfo.htm. Park naturalists created the adopt-a-trail program to maintain the trails and to protect native plants from three aggressive species: Chinese Privet, Chinese Tallow, and Japanese Climbing Fern.  For more information, contact Joy George at jgeo61@sbcglobal.net or 281-376-3062.
    .
  • Lone Star Hiking Trail - The Houston Sierra Club conducts regular trail maintenance on the Lone Star Hiking Trail in Sam Houston National Forest.  For more information, contact Brandt Mannchen at 713-664-5962.

See the calendar for specific activity information.

Outreach Activities

  • Inner City Outings - Inner City Outings (ICO) is a community outreach program of the Sierra Club.  Our volunteer leaders, trained in recreational, outdoor and safety skills as well as environmental education, provide wilderness adventures for people who wouldn't otherwise have them - including low-income youth of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, hearing or visually impaired individuals, and the physically disabled.  For information on how you can support or participate in the Houston ICO program, contact Lorraine Gibson at 281-384-4104 or e-mail raineygib@aol.com.
    ..
  • Membership - The group's Membership Committee seeks to recruit new members, publicize the group's activities, encourage members to become more active and promotes camaraderie among the members.  Contact Arlene Diehl for more information via e-mail at arlenediehl@peoplepc.com.

December 10 (Thu) - Annual Auction - Volunteers and Donations Needed - We will hold our fundraising "Live and Silent Annual Action" along with our Holiday Gathering at our December monthly General Meeting, Thursday, December 10, at 6:30 p.m. This is one of the club's biggest fundraising events. All proceeds will be used to support our local conservation and educational programs including the printing and mailing of our newsletter. We had many successful auctions in the past years, thanks to all our donors, volunteers and bidders, and we are looking forward to another successful event. We are beginning to accept donations for the auction. An early response is needed so we can publish the auction items in the upcoming issues of our Bayou Banner. Suggestions for donations would be rentals for cabins, rooms, sailboats, canoes, bicycles, etc.; gift certi?cates or gift cards for services, performances, merchants or restaurants; and goods such as camping equipment, crafts, artwork, or autographed books. We need volunteers prior to the event to help solicit for auction items, pick up donated items or help promote and advertise the event. Additionally we will need many volunteers on the day of the event to help with our refreshment table and setting up the event. To donate, volunteer or for more information about the auction contact Arlene Diehl at 281-252-4639 or arlenediehl@peoplepc.com.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED - Special Volunteers Needed in addition to our monthly trail work 1. I need volunteers who have carpenter skills to repair bridges that have been damaged on the LSHT. No dates have been set, I would call each individual with information which Saturday these events would take place. 2. I need volunteers who have carpenter and power tool experience to make signs for the LSHT. I would gather the materials, we would meet here in Houston, and make wooden signs for the trail. 3. I need volunteers the last weekend in October to assist students with the Inner City Outing Group conduct trail work on the Trail Between the Lakes. If you are interested in any of these projects, call Jane Prentiss, 713-201-5755 or lshttrailboss@yahoo.com.
